Boasting the same strong and easy-going nature as its well-known cousin, Epipactis gigantea Red Leaf displays beautiful, red tinted foliage. The perfect contrast, showing off the bright, orange copper blooms to their very best, so the colour almost seems to pop. Flowering from late June through to August, stiff stems hold up to 15 intricately marked blooms and simple, pointed upturned leaves. Blooming in sequence, going up each stem, this attractive beauty is deer resistant and perfect for both borders and containers. Growing from horizontal rhizomes, creeping beneath the soil expanding the luscious leafy clump each year, new shoots appear in spring. Known commonly as the Stream Orchid, Epipactis gigantea Red Leaf thrives in moist, but well-drained soil, preferring a sunny or partially shaded spot in any aspect. Hardy to around -15°C, so winter protection will not be required, it will reach a mature height and spread of 45cm.
