Tell Me More...
One of the best Epimedium for foliage colour, new foliage emerges bronze-flushed, turning green as it matures, then red-bronze again in the autumn. Each spring, Epimedium versicolor sulphureum produces delicate sulphur-yellow flowers looking rather like little hats, hence the common name Bishops Hat, the delicate blooms nod gently in the slightest breeze. Originally found growing wild in the woodlands of China and Japan, Epimedium have been a popular garden plant there for many years, here in the UK we are just starting to appreciate their beauty.Wiry stems hold sprays of pretty, star-like flowers, each with four sepals, which create the hat shape. Epimedium flower abundantly in spring and early summer over clumps of pretty, heart-shaped, evergreen foliage. Spreading by rhizomes, Epimedium make wonderful weed-suppressing all-year-round groundcover, just perfect for planting into borders and containers or a woodland setting. Epimedium prefer to be grown in moist, well-drained soil in full or part shade. Growing to a height of around 35cm and spread of 30-45cm, Epimedium are fully hardy perennials, meaning you will enjoy them outside for many years to come without the worry of needing winter protection.
