Whilst not quite technicolour - this hardy, deciduous shrub certainly has a 'coat of many colours' - much like Joseph in the popular musical. Enkianthus campanulatus 'Prettycoat' provides a fantastic spectacle with pink and cream, bell-shaped blooms suspended in racemes from red stems during May and June each year. Flowers contrast beautifully with the dark green, simple leaves which have gently serrated edges and emerge in early spring. Then, as autumn comes near, foliage begins to shift and takes on yellows, oranges and bright reds offering a second, equally spectacular display. As a more compact variety, Enkianthus campanulatus 'Prettycoat' will happily grow in a container as well as any spot which benefits from full sun or partial shade in a neutral to acidic soil. In fact, if you have acidic soil, then the autumnal display is likely to be even more fiery.Reaches a mature height and spread of 2 metres with an average growth rate. Likes humus-rich soil which is moist, yet well-drained and little pruning is required. Will benefit from an annual mulch of leaf mould or compost in springtime.
