Tell Me More...
Dryopteris erythrosora is a colourful, semi-evergreen fern which is adaptable enough to grow in almost any situation. What is more, the young fronds on this special plant emerge in a coppery-pink colour to add an unusual detail to your planting and then mature to a vibrant green. Small wonder that Dryopteris erythrosora holds RHS Award of Garden Merit – an accolade which confirms its outstanding performance in the garden. Dryopteris erythrosora is, as its common name implies, native to east Asia (including China and as far south as the Philippines) where it grows in light woodland shade or on hills and the lower slopes of mountains. The Latin name literally translates as ‘erythros’ meaning red, and ‘sori’ meaning heap – which refers to colour and its clumping habit. A hardy (H4), perennial which prefers moist, well-drained soil of any kind, but will also tolerate poorly drained soil or free draining soil too. Plants benefit from a sheltered position away from strong winds and an annual mulch in autumn to protect crowns if temperatures are likely to drop below -10°C. Plants reach a height and spread of 60-75cm.
