Tell Me More...
The shining star of your garden, Echinacea purpurea 'Leuchtstern' make an impressive statement from July to September. Numerous large blooms are held on strong stems, consisting of an array of pink-purple, daisy-like petals which surround an orange, distinctive, stiff, raised central cone.Native to prairie lands and meadows in central America and commonly known as the purple coneflower, the stems make an excellent, long-lasting addition to your floral arrangements, whether dried or cut fresh. If left on the plant over winter, Goldfinches and other small birds will enjoy feeding on the seed. The name Echinacea stems from the Greek meaning hedgehog, in reference to the spiny central cone.Happiest grown in moist, well-drained soil, whether in a container or a border, in a sunny spot, reaching a height and spread of 65-85cm. Echinacea purpurea 'Leuchtstern' is an herbaceous perennial which will die back over winter, becoming dormant in readiness to sprout again in the spring. Hardy to around -15 C, extra winter protection should not be required.
