Tell Me More...
Also known as Prickly Rasp Fern, Doodia aspera 'Rough Ruby' is native to New Zealand, Australia and the Pacific Islands. Ferns have existed for million years and are easy going plants perfect for beginners or those of us who have little time yet still appreciate their outdoor spaces. Plants offer lush, handsome fronds, which intriguingly unfurl to introduce much valued movement, often all year round, with virtually no care at all. The fronds of 'Rough Ruby' emerge maroon and change to reddish pink in springtime, then mature to dark green through various shades of oranges and yellows. Leaves have saw-like edges, hence the common name, adding further interest and providing fascinating texture to your planting.Doodia aspera 'Rough Ruby' is a half-hardy, semi-evergreen fern which, dependent on where you garden in the UK, may need winter protection. Planting in a container is ideal if this is the case, just ensure that your fern has humus rich, moist yet well-drained soil in full or partial shade for best results.
