Digitalis purpurea ‘Dalmatian Rose’ produces elegant spires clustered in downward facing soft pink bells from June to August. Each pretty bloom is almost white on the inside with burgundy specks which look like tiny footprints left behind after frequenting bees. Commonly known as Foxgloves, Digitalis are nostalgic and popular woodland plants. Semi-evergreen and biennial, they bloom during the second year of growth before setting seed. Excellent for cutting and for naturalising in moist soil which is rich in leaf mould or natural organic matter. If self-seeding is not desired, remove spent spikes after blooming. A position in sun or partial shade is ideal. Does well in any aspect and can also be grown successfully in containers of humus-rich, well-drained soil or compost. If you garden on clay soil, enrich the planting area first with leaf mould and add grit to the base of planting holes to aid drainage. Position towards the middle or back of your garden border or pot to bloom above and behind other plants. Looks brilliant in a cottage garden or contemporary design with fresh green foliage plants. H&S: 60cm x 45cm. Digitalis purpurea ‘Dalmatian Rose’ is a hardy (H5) biennial which does not require winter protection.
