An RHS award-winning variety, Digitalis purpurea ‘Dalmatian Purple’ produces eye-catching spires of downward facing violet-pink bells from June to August. Commonly known as Foxgloves, Digitalis are traditional woodland biennials, blooming in their second year before setting seed - beautiful for naturalising in damp, well-drained soil which is rich in humus. This variety grows well in any soil type except heavy clay. Plant in a spot where it benefits from full sun or partial shade and, if you garden on heavy clay soil, enrich with leaf mould and grit to assist drainage before planting. Digitalis purpurea ‘Dalmatian Purple’ are great for bees and other pollinators, excellent for cutting, and, as a shorter variety which reaches up to 60cm tall, will also do well in pots. Position plants towards the middle or back of the border where they will bloom above and behind their companions, spreading to around 45cm. A semi-evergreen, hardy (H5) biennial which does not require winter protection.
