Tell Me More...
When restraint and subtlety just won't do, a big, beefy delphinium such as 'Pacific Galahad' can be just the thing. This supersize variety belongs to a series known as the Pacific Giants, developed in California back in the 1950s and 60s. Its plants produce towering spires of up to 1.75m tall, bearing, in this case, many dazzling pure white flowers. 'Pacific Galahad' is at its most effective grown in groups, creating a dense, almost forest-like swathe of luminous vertical accents. We love seeing a drift towards the back of a mixed border, its bold, chunky appearance drawing the eye from afar. The moment for delphiniums is early to mid-summer, though second flush of flowering is possible if spent flower spikes are removed straight away, and plants are regularly fed (ideally fortnightly). For best results plant in fertile, moist, well-drained soil in full sun, with staked support and shelter from strong, cold winds. 'Pacific Galahad' is hardy to between -10 C and -15 C. As a short-lived perennial it is often treated as an annual or biennial, though with care and attention can be kept going for longer. H: 1.75m S: 1m.
