Growing wild in the Himalayas and China, hence the common name Himalayan Poppy, the elegant, silky flowers gently nod in the breeze and are borne on strong stems that arise from a rosette of soft bristly leaves. The large blooms can reach up to 10cm across making a spectacularly elegant display and a rich feast for bees and other pollinators. Collection comprises; baileyi Alba - an unusual white variety, large, pure white blooms to 10cm across, with a contrasting yellow centre from May to July, height 1m, spread 50cm; and baileyi ‘China Blue’ - the beautiful, tissue like flax blue blooms appear in early summer and look almost unreal, they are so intense, height 1.2m, spread 45-60cm. Meconopsis are the perfect addition to shaded or woodland areas of the garden, preferring to be grown in slightly acidic, moist soil which doesn’t dry out. Position in partial shade, in a west or east facing aspect to avoid hot sun. Herbaceous perennials hardy to -10°C.
