Allium were once known for their medical, culinary, and aphrodisiac qualities and the foliage emits a slightly oniony fragrance when crushed. Nowadays alliums are a favourite in RHS Show Gardens, and we think that no garden should be without at least one.Collection comprises; Allium cowanii - one of the earliest flowering of the family, putting on a stunning show for several weeks from April to May with large heads of pure white flowers held on wiry stems, reaching a height of approximately 40cm; Allium neapolitanum - small white flowers form a spherical flowerhead in April and May held more loosely than other alliums and this helps to give a lacey effect, height 45cm; and Allium oreophilum - in late spring and early summer, this shorter allium forms striking globular flowers with up to 20 starry cerise pink flowers with a pink or yellow centre and deep pink vein lines, height 20cm. Alliums are both deer and rabbit resistant and look incredible when used as cut flowers, lasting up to 2 weeks in a vase. Much loved by bees and butterflies, they are drought tolerant and happy even in poor soils preferring well-drained soil in sun. Hardy bulbous perennials that can be left in the ground, dying back over winter to sprout again in the spring.
