Big, beefy, and evergreen With fronds bearing glossy, dark green, pinnae which look almost holly or mahonia-like in appearance, Cyrtomium falcatum has one of the chunkiest textures we have come across in a fern. This handsome evergreen (becoming deciduous in colder climates) is found growing wild in forests, stream banks and cliff crevices throughout Japan. For best results, find a planting position which replicates these conditions; rock gardens, beneath trees, adjacent to water features, or at the base of a stone wall are all suitable situations. Alternatively, Cyrtomium falcatum can also make an attractive houseplant. Prefers moderately fertile, humus-rich, moist, well-drained soil in partial to full shade. H&S: 90cm x 70cm. This half-hardy perennial is capable of withstanding temperatures down to -5 C. To increase chances of survival in colder parts of the UK, grow in the shelter of a rock, wall, tree, or shrub, and cover the crown with straw in winter.
