You may also know this special little bulb, the Crocus sativus, as the Saffron Crocus and the deep, red stigma can, indeed, be harvested to provide you with the most expensive spice in the world! Cultivated for thousands of years, this fully hardy bulb needs full sun and a well-drained, poor to moderately fertile soil to flower in October-November. Not only are the jewel-like stigmas of Crocus sativus highly prized but the rich lilac flowers are a delight to behold too. Plant the bulbs 10-15cm deep in the autumn and the delicately, purple-veined flowers will emerge along with the deep-green grass-like foliage. Then a glorious crop of saffron will crown these pretty blooms. Pick these strands carefully, using tweezers, so as not to damage the three stigma each produces. Crocus sativus bulbs are hardy enough to withstand UK winters, providing they do not sit in waterlogged soil. Divide every 3-4 years in order to maintain production.
