As special as the butterfly from which it draws its name, Crocus oliviero subsp. balansae 'Orange Monarch' is not only exquisite, it is the first bright orange bloom of the crocus family. Flowers shine out brightly, even on the dullest of days, illuminating the garden from February to March. Goblet-shaped blooms each have dark, brownish-black veining that looks almost hand painted. Blooms nestle above thin, grass-like, variegated leaves which are retained from February through to May. Crocus oliviero subsp. balansae 'Orange Monarch' reaches a height of approximately 15cm and is wonderful planted in either open ground or in containers. Also stunning planted in drifts or naturalised throughout your lawn. Its hardy nature belies its delicate looks - this is a tough little bloom provides a spurt of colour just when its needed and its arrival means winter is losing its icy grip and warmer times are over the horizon. Also a fantastic provider of sustenance for the hibernating insects emerging from their slumbers. A hardy, bulbous perennial with prefers a spot in moist, well-drained soil with full sun.
