Instantly recognisable in garden borders and in pots, Lupinus (Lupins) bring height and verticality to your garden with spectacular spires of summer shades.
Once thought of as the mainstay of the country garden, Lupin can now be seen in more modern planting styles. Small, pea-like blooms pack the tops of strong stems creating stunning floral spires in June and July. Bringing a touch of class to any garden, the stems are also excellent when cut for indoor arrangements.
Adored by bees and other pollinators, lupins are legumes, related to peas and beans. Taking nitrogen from the air, and storing it within their roots, they use it for their own growth, but also release it into the soil which benefits surrounding plants.
Lupinus prefer to be planted in a sunny spot but will cope with part shade. Lupins are fully hardy perennials with an RHS hardiness rating of H5 and will reach a height of around 60cm and spread to 35cm.
