You will gaze in wonder, firstly when it flowers in late spring to early summer, and then again in autumn - when its dark green foliage turns to shades of reddish purple, accompanied by ornamental, intriguing red fruits. What garden designers refer to as a specimen tree - for its outstanding presence wherever you choose to plant it. The flowers are small and greatly surpassed by the white bracts that surround the green blooms. Nonetheless, they are attractive to pollinators and beneficial to wildlife later in the season too, so have a vital role.Plant Cornus kousa var. chinensis in fertile, well-drained soil which benefits from full sun or partial shade. Happy at the edges of woodland areas or in open ground this hardy, deciduous beauty forms a conical shape as it matures and reaches a height of up to 7 metres, with a spread of 5 metres over 20-50 years.
