This beautiful cornus (also known as dogwood) is a deciduous shrub with striking purple-black stems in winter. The foliage is equally eye-catching - shoots emerge as dark green and develop purple tinges as they unfurl. In autumn they change again to a deep, rich red before dropping the leaves to reveal the decorative stems. White flowers are borne in late spring - early summer and these develop into white berries, highlighted by the deep coloured foliage in autumn. Overall a stunning addition to your garden which, if grown for stem colour, requires hard pruning in early spring. Plant in full sun or partial shade either as a focal plant or on mass to add drama to autumn and winter borders. Cornus alba Kesselringii will grow in almost any soil and reaches 250cm in height with a 250cm spread over 20 years - it is, however, easily pruned to suit your needs.
