Tell Me More...
An unusual and exciting flower which appears long before any foliage in September to October. Colchicum autumnale 'Pleniflorum' brings generous double flowers which appear on long strong stems almost overnight. Flowers have generous and colourful upward facing tassels ideal for borders, containers and open ground. Eager to naturalise these nectar-rich blooms entice in pollinators and can even be cut for a posy vase.Colchicum autumnale 'Pleniflorum' has a number of common names, one of which, Naked Ladies, refers to the fact that foliage does not appear with the blooms but comes later, in springtime. In modern herbalism colchcum is still used to relieve the pain and inflammation of acute gout and rheumatism - though after special processing, as all parts of the plant are poisonous when ingested.Plant in a site which benefits from moist, well-drained soil and part sun to full shade. Hardy, bulbous perennials which reach a height of 20cm and spread to 15cm.
