Tell Me More...
Known as the Sweet Pepper Bush, Clethra aln. 'Sixteen Candles' produces highly fragranced upright white flowers in July and August which are adored by butterflies - and who doesn't love to watch butterflies dancing around their garden in summertime?!This unusual and attractive shrub has won a prestigious Award of Garden Merit from the RHS, and it is easy to see why. With a sturdy and upright growth habit of up to 1m tall, deciduous Clethra aln. 'Sixteen Candles' bears attractive glossy green foliage which turns into beautiful shades of golden yellow in autumn before dropping. Preferring acid soil, which is moist and well-drained, Clethra aln. 'Sixteen Candles' is a great shrub for a sunny or part-shaded location in the middle to back of the border - merging well into virtually any planting scheme. Clethra aln. 'Sixteen Candles' spreads via suckers, so remove these if you do not wish for the plants to naturalise in your garden.
