When adding floral interest to a shady spot, few plants can better the candelabra primrose; its palette of rich, bright, sumptuous colours a rare find among shade-loving plants. From rosettes of attractive, crinkled leaves emerge stout stems bearing whorls of bright flowers arranged in several tiers. Flowers appear during the often 'hungry gap' of late spring to midsummer, adding further to the value and appeal of this essential garden member. Suitable for damp, shady borders, pond margins, woodland gardens or even (regularly watered) containers. Best seen grown in generous drifts, which can be easily achieved by allowing plants to self-seed.Prefer deep, humus-rich, moist, neutral to acid soil in partial shade. Full sun will be tolerated if the soil remains moist. Hardy, long-lived, deciduous perennials.
