Tell Me More...
Whether you wish to garnish a refreshing tipple, make a zesty dessert, or simply to enjoy the heady fragrant blossom, Citrus aurantifolia 'Mexican Lime' makes an excellent, intriguing addition to the garden. Known as key lime, bartenders' lime and West Indian Lime, this tree produces tart citrus fruit the size of a golf ball, ripening between September and December. Lustrous, leathery, evergreen foliage creates the perfect backdrop to the delicate white blossom and glossy green fruits. Citrus aurantifolia 'Mexican Lime' relishes a sheltered position, basking in plenty of sunshine. Plant in well-drained, loamy soil, with a neutral to acidic pH. This tree matures to a height of up to 4m, and spreads to 2.5m, however it is likely to remain a more manageable size in our cooler climate. As a tender, fruiting shrub Citrus aurantifolia 'Mexican Lime' is best grown in a container and brought into a heated greenhouse or conservatory over winter. Prune in spring every 2-3 years to improve access to light and air flow.
