Whether trained against a wall or grown as a freestanding shrub, Chaenomeles japonica ‘Sargentii’ is an undemanding yet impressive addition to the garden. From March to April, clusters of vibrant orange flowers clothe bare, thorny branches, which later in the year are covered with glossy leaves and fragrant yellow fruits. The flowers are an invaluable early source of nectar for pollinators, and the fruits are ideal for making quince jelly. ‘Sargentii’ is hugely versatile and can be grown in either sun or shade (though flowering and fruiting are best in the sun). We love seeing it in combination with a flowering cherry such as Prunus ‘Kojo-no-mai’, and a subtle smattering of spring bulbs and corms such as chionodoxa, scilla and Anemone blanda at ground level. For best results grow in moist, well-draining soil. Chaenomeles japonica ‘Sargentii’ is a tough deciduous shrub, able to withstand an exposed, windy spot and hardy to -20°C. H: 2.5m S: 2.5m.
