Vitex is a genus of flowering plants within the Lamiaceae family, native to temperate regions of Eurasia. They are most commonly referred to as the ‘Chastetree’. The genus was formally named in 1753 by Carl Linnaeus, a Swedish botanist. The name is derived from the Latin word ‘vieo’ meaning ‘to weave’, as the flexible limbs of these plants are a popular material in basket weaving.
Vitex are deciduous or evergreen trees and shrubs with grey-green foliage and clusters of tubular flowers, with some varieties releasing a rich scent and producing stunning berries .
