Strelitzia

History and Origin:

Strelitzia is a genus of plants within the Strelitziaceae family, native to South Africa. It is most commonly referred to as ‘Bird of Paradise’. It was first introduced to Britain in 1773 by Sir Joseph Banks, an unofficial director of the Royal Gardens at Kew. He named the genus name in honour of Queen Charlotte, the wife of George III Duchess of Mecklenburg-Strelitz, who resided at Kew for many years.

About:

Strelitzia evergreen perennials that provide an exotic and highly prized addition to your garden. Striking and unmistakable blooms closely resemble tropical birds with blooms coloured in deep shades of purple and orange during spring and winter. Stiff stems hold broad, banana-like foliage that create year-long interest.
