Solanum is a large genus of roughly 1,500-2,000 species of vine, subshrubs and shrubs. The origins of its name are unknown but it has been suggested the same could derive from the Lation word 'sol' meaning 'sun' or 'solare' meaning 'to soothe' or 'solamen' meaning 'a comfort'. The genus was established by Carl Linnaeus, a Swedish botanist, physician and zoologist in 1753.
Solanum can be annuals, perennials, evergreen or decidious shrubs or climbers. They have flowers with large stamens that are then followed by fleshy fruits and simple or pinnately lobed leaves. They are well-suited to borers, bed and cottage gardens. Climbing varieties of Solanum are great for twining through shrubs or over a fence.
