Sempervivum

History and Origin:

Sempervivum is a genus of around 40 species in the Crassulaceae family. The name Sempervivum comes from the Latin words semper, meaning always and vivus meaning living. They are more commonly known as Houseleeks but are also known as hen and chicks due to their ability to produce small offsets. Their fleshy leaves store water, meaning they are perfect for growing on sunny rocks and stony mountaineous areas.

About:

Sempervivum are evergreen perennials with fleshy, succulent leaves that form rosettes. From the centre of the rosettes, thick flowering stalks arise in summer with star-shaped pink or yellow flowers. They constantly produce offsets, each one developing its own root system and becoming totally independent. Incredibly tough, Sempervivum are perfect for growing in containers or in a rock garden.
