Schlumbergera is a genus of plants within the Cactaceae, native to Brazil. They are most commonly known as the ‘Christmas Cactus’ during to their flowering period. Some varieties of Schlumbergera were in cultivation in Europe by 1818 where they were popular for their autumn and winter colour. Botanist Charles Lemaire (1801-1871) named Schlumbergera in 1858, in honour of Frédéric Schlumberger (1823-1893), a French collector of cacti and succulents.
