Saponaria

History and Origin:

Saponaria is a genus of flowering plants within the Caryophyllaceae family, native to Europe and Asia. They are most commonly referred to as ‘soapworts’. During the Stone Age, Saponaria was used for hygiene purposes. People would wash their hands in the stream and remove the leaves of plants growing nearby. Saponaria would grow near streams and the lather from its leaves would help cleaning. This was also adopted in Roman gardens and around Roman baths.

About:

Saponaria are annual or perennial plants with compact clusters of pink or purple flowers that flourish throughout summer.
