History and Origin:

Fothergilla are a genus of flowering plants within the Hamamelidaceae family, native to south east America. They are commonly known as ‘witch alder’. The genus is named after Dr John Fothergill (1712–1780), an English physician whose garden included one of the earliest, most widespread collections of North American plants.

Fothergilla are deciduous shrubs with dark, ovate foliage and intriguingly shaped bottle-brush or cylindrical flowers throughout spring and summer. In autumn, you should expect to see the foliage change to exquisite shades of red, orange and yellow.
