Cynara is a genus within the Asteraceae family, native to the Mediterranean, middle east, Africa and Canary Islands. The genus name is derived from the Greek word ‘kynara’ meaning ‘artichoke’ – this is where is receives its common name. This plant has long been used as a form of medicine and food as early as the 4th century B.C. Cynara is one of the oldest cultivated plants and is documented in ancient Egyptian and Roman artwork.
Cynara are thistle-like plants that are held above clusters of deeply cut silver-grey foliage. The seed heads provide you with a fantastic ornamental feature for winter interest and are a popular choice in flower arrangements.
