Crocus is a genus belonging to the Iridaceae family, native to Southern Europe, Central Asia, China and Africa. Crocus flowers were mentioned in Greek literature in and around 300BC, although the exact origin is unknown. The word Crocus is Latin, meaning Saffron – where some parts of the plant are used in cooking as a seasoning or natural colourant.
Crocus are bulbs or corms with long linear leaves fashioning an attractive, shimmering stripe of silver. Large and sometimes scented goblet-shaped blooms provide subtle yet stunning colour, making the perfect addition to the front of a border, container or for naturalising into larger blankets of floral colour during late autumn and early spring.
