Carex is a genus of approximately 2000 species within the Cyperaceae family, found across the globe preferring wetlands, marshes, bogland and banks close to ponds and streams. They are more commonly referred to as ‘Sedges’. The genus Carex was first documented by Carl Linnaeus, a swedish botanist in his work ‘Species Plantarum’ that was published in 1753.
Carex are deciduous or evergreen perennials with slender, linear and strap-shaped leaves that display spikes of green or brown flowers throughout spring, summer and autumn. Grown primarily for their foliage, Carex provide sought-after texture and movement within flower beds, borders and containers and will even make a fine addition to a cut flower arrangement.
