Butomus is a species in the Butomaceae family, native to Europe and Asia and is considered invasive in some parts of North America. It's name comes from the Greek 'bous' which means 'cow' or 'ox' and the word 'tome' which means 'a cut' which refers to its sword-shaped leaves.
Butomus are rhizomatous, fully hardy aqautic perennial plants, commonly known as Flowering Rush. They produce umbels of flowers during the summer which are great for pollinators. Butomus are best suited to pond margins or in water as they are an aquatic plant.
