Argemone is a genus of around 32 species in the family Papaveraceae and are native to the Americas and Hawaii. The name Argemone originates from the Greek work agena which means 'cataract of the eye' as these plants were originally thought to be a cure for cataracts. They are more commonly known as prickly poppies due to their poppy-like flowers but prickly stems.
Argemone is a perennial or annual plant with upright stems and prickly, spiky thistle-like leaves. They have poppy-like flowers with red or yellow stamens. They are well-suited to a cottage or wildlife gardening style and also make a nice addition to a wildlife garden, as the blooms are attractive to pollinators.
