Abelia are native to Eastern Asia and Southern Mexico. This shrub is a genus of approximately 30 species and forms part of the Honeysuckle family, Caprifoliaceae. The generic title ‘Abelia’ is named after Clarke Abel, an English surgeon and naturalist who accompanied Lord Amherst on a trip to China in 1816. Most of Abel’s work was lost during his return voyage although those that survived included several new species that were named after him.
Abelia are deciduous or evergreen shrubs and trees with fabulous clusters of trumpet-shaped blooms that are enclosed by an umbrella of colourful sepals. The foliage is often waxy or glossy which enhances the array of colour and texture that is displayed during summer and autumn. Abelia make a great addition to low maintenance wall side borders and courtyard gardens.
