Tell Me More...
This pretty perennial has the intriguing common name Cupid's Dart - the botanical name is derived from a Greek word meaning 'a strong incentive' and Greek women used the plant as part of a love potion. No recipe for this potion was available but, nonetheless, you will fall in love Catananche caerulea's dusky blue-lilac flowers that resemble gently frilled daisies and have a deeper purple centre with a peppering of yellow stamen. Plant it in full sun with well-drained soil and it will reach a height of 100cm and spread to 50cm. Although technically a perennial it is often treated as an annual and is ideal for planting in meadows or as a larger group in your borders. The leaves are sparse, basal rosettes of grey-green colour so a group of at least 3 plants together will show off its best asset - an abundance of flowers from June to September. Keep the seed heads to add further Autumn interest to your garden.
