It really is no wonder Carex oshimensis Evergold has been awarded a prestigious Award of Garden Merit (AGM) by the Royal Horticultural Society, for it brings an air of graceful texture to virtually any planting scheme. Arching, green and yellow striped leaves shimmer and dance in the breeze on this fully-hardy, evergreen Japanese sedge. Small brown flowers appear from April to June swaying above its tufts. Carex oshimensis Evergold's non-spreading habit, reaching 30cm by 30cm makes it a great grass for a pot; simply beautiful on its own, or complimenting other plants with its texture and colour. This carex also looks fabulous growing next to a water feature or pond where it will not dry out and the foliage can tumble over and soften edges. Plant in free-draining, fertile soil which should be always kept moist. This striking grass grows best in shade and will benefit from combing through with your fingers in winter to remove dead stems rather than harshly cutting back.
