Tell Me More...
As big as they come, Cardiocrinum giganteum is the largest member of the lily family and, despite its size, is a little-known variety. Native to the Himalayas and China flowers emerge in June to August each year above luscious rosettes of foliage, often the size of dinner plates. This rare and beautiful bloom is perfect for a woodland or partially shaded setting where it can lend its jungle-like, architectural impact to your planting. Although plants are tall, reaching up to 2 metres in height, it is possible you will smell its sweet, intense, vanilla fragrance before you spot the racemes of numerous trumpet-shaped white and purple blooms. As you would expect, flowers are loved by bees and other pollinators who will be sure to visit for a feast. Cardiocrinum giganteum prefers a spot in moist, fertile, humus rich soil which benefits from cooling, dappled shade. Feed with bone meal when in flower and give plenty of water, especially during dry periods - you will then be rewarded with decorative seedpods as the flowers fade. A hardy, herbaceous perennial which spreads around 50cm and tolerates temperatures down to -15 C.
