With generous blooms up to 10cm across, the brilliant white blooms of Camellia sasanqua ‘Chantal’ will not go unnoticed. Enrobing the glossy, dark green foliage for up to 3 months from October to December, blooms are further enhanced by a crown of golden stamen to the centre which make a wonderful inclusion to vases and festive displays indoors. Native to China and Japan, sasanqua type camelias were introduced to Europe in the early 1800s, becoming ever popular over the generations. Flowers are generally slightly smaller, yet equally prolific as their cousins, camelia japonica. Forming a generous tree or shrub – dependent upon pruning, the natural shape of Camelia sasanqua ‘Chantal’ is pyramidal, and plants will mature to a height of up to 2m, with a spread of up to 1m. Camellia sasanqua ‘Chantal’ prefers to be planted in moist, well-drained soil of any kind except chalk based. Plants like a neutral to mildly acidic pH and a spot in full sun or partial shade. A hardy (H4), evergreen shrub which should not need additional winter protection throughout most of the UK, although flowers may be damaged by frost in exposed sites.
