Much loved and admired for the profusion of purple berries, Callicarpa dichotoma Issai is also known as The Beauty Berry. As new foliage appears in the spring, the leaf buds emerge, maturing to dark green. In summer racemes of stunning, nectar-rich, pink flowers appear on upright stems. By late autumn and winter, large, compact clusters of vibrant, almost metallic-like, violet-purple, bead-like berries form. These berries look spectacular whilst glistening in the sun on the bare branches after the leaves have fallen to the ground. The bare branches are much loved by florists, as they are excellent for floral arrangements both when laden with berries, and also when the new, young, purple foliage is emerging.Callicarpa dichotoma Issai prefers to be grown in moist, well-drained soil in sun or part shade. Growing to a height of approximately 2.5m, and spreading to 2m, with an RHS hardiness rating of H6, she is fully hardy so will flourish outside to be enjoyed all year round without the need for any winter protection.
