A darker member of this immensely popular family of shrubs. Buddleja davidii 'Black Knight' offers inky purple, almost black, honey-scented, cone shaped panicles from June through to September each year. If this is not enough, the foliage which is held from March to the first frosts is silvery green, with almost white undersides which will shimmer as they catch the breeze. Flowers have orange, pin-head centres contrasting beautifully with the darker petals. As the common name suggests, these intriguing blooms are irresistible to butterflies as well as bees and other pollinators. You will find native small tortoiseshell, red admiral and peacock varieties becoming constant visitors on sunnier days.Buddleja davidii 'Black Knight' will thrive in borders and even a large container. Position in full sun, although these shrubs will tolerate partial shade. Choose a spot which is south, east or west facing with well-drained soil. Prune back hard in early spring as flowers emerge on new growth each year. This hardy, deciduous shrub which holds an RHS AGM award for outstanding garden performance is drought tolerant once established and reaches up to 3m tall with a maximum spread of 5m.
