Mystical and opulent, growing hardy terrestrial Bletilla orchids need not be perplexing as they are simple to grow in our climate. Plant in moist, fertile soil which is well-drained in partial shade and Bletilla will thrive. These charming woodland beauties naturalise easily in the right area adding intrigue and beauty to your borders when they flower in early to mid-summer.
Strap-like, ribbed foliage remains attractive unlike most Orchids, only becoming dormant in winter. The rhizomes grow half in and half out of the soil, producing textured foliage early in the year, followed by strong stems which hold many open-mouthed blooms in racemes, during spring and early summer.
This collection comprises Blue Dragon – lavender-violet, fragrant blooms; Paris – bright, cerise-pink blooms with a patterned lower lip; Shi-ran – pale lavender-pink blooms, with yellowish lower lip that is patterned with purple.
