An exotic looking bloom with the added benefit of being hardy
Often known as Hyacinth Orchids, Bletilla striata ‘Penway Dragon grex’ are surprisingly easy to grow. Plant in partial shade or under deciduous trees or shrubs, in moist, well-drained soil which is rich in organic matter, and they will thrive and multiply by rhizomes, (or pseudobulbs). Plant and grow half in and half out of the soil.
The broad, ribbed, strap-like, arching foliage of the Bletilla striata ‘Penway Dragon grex’ remains attractive most of the year, only becoming dormant over winter. The lower lip of each of its exotic blooms of delicate pink are flecked with a stripe of yellow, making them impossible to miss when they flower during June and July.
Reaching a height of 60cm and spread to around 30cm. Once established, Bletilla are hardy to between -5°C and -10°C, meaning winter protection is normally only required in the coldest winters in the coldest areas of the UK.
