Tell Me More...
Rare and unusual terrestrial orchidBletilla striata 'Alba Variegata' stands out from the crowd. Broad ribbed, pleated foliage forms attractive clumps, each leaf variegated with white edges. Wiry stems rise in June and July, displaying racemes of 3-5 white orchid-like blooms with pretty, lilac tinge to the petals. Often known as Chinese Ground Orchid, Bletilla striata are surprisingly easy to grow. Plant in partial shade or under deciduous trees or shrubs, in moist, well-drained soil which is rich in organic matter, and they will thrive and multiply by rhizomes which grow half in and half out of the soil. Bletilla striata 'Alba Variegata' also grows well in pots which can then be brought undercover for added protection in the winter months. Reaching a height and spread of around 60cm, once established Bletilla striata 'Alba Variegata' is hardy to between -5 C and -10 C, meaning winter protection is only required in the coldest winters in the coldest areas of the UK.
