Blechnum penna-marina is an attractive evergreen, fronded fern that forms a lush mat, with a spreading habit which will create fantastic weed-suppressing and moisture retentive groundcover. Young new fronds emerge a rich coppery-red in the spring becoming green as they mature. Deer and rabbit resistant, this evergreen perennial is native to Chile and other areas of central America. Commonly known as the Alpine Water Fern, Blechnum penna-marina will fill crevices and cracks as it spreads, carpeting and softening hard landscaping. Given the RHS Award of Garden Merit for outstanding garden performance, it also loves being in a shady container. Blechnum penna-marina prefers to be grown in moist, acidic soil in full or partial shade, where it will grow to a height of 30cm, spreading to around 1m. With an RHS hardiness rating of H4, Blechnum may require winter protection should the temperature dip below -10 C.
