Tell Me More...
Part of the Decadence series of baptisia with an entirely fitting name to accompany its alluring beauty. Baptisia australis 'Dutch Chocolate' produces tall stems, bearing pea-like blooms in rich shades of reddish-brown and yellow from May through to July each year. Nectar-rich, these flowers will pull in pollinators for a feast and also make a beautiful inclusion in a vase or bouquet. Plant in loam or sand-based soil for best results as these intriguing blooms do not like to sit in water.Foliage from Baptisia australis 'Dutch Chocolate' is glaucous green and bushy - bringing the perfect foil to the richly hued blooms. Leaves emerge in March and remain through to November for gap-filling extended interest. After the flowers fade, seed pods are produced which also lengthen your enjoyment - leave them through winter and they will look magical when covered with frost.Plant in well-drained soil which enjoys full sun and any aspect other than north-facing. A fully hardy, herbaceous perennial which reaches a height and spread of 90cm.
