Aubretia are a wonderful, eye-catching sight every spring. Ground hugging plants which produce waterfalls of spectacular colour, heralding the arrival of warmer days. Surprisingly, an alpine member of the Brassica family and named after Claude Aubriet, a French botanical artist and flower illustrator. Aubretia originate from southern Europe and central Asia where they grow wild in poor rocky ground, and are now a firm favourite in many British gardens. A magnificent display is produced every spring, over evergreen, oval-shaped, slightly hairy, groundcover foliage until early summer each year. Perfect creeping across a path, tumbling down from the top of a wall, or spilling over the edge of a planter, attracting bees to your garden. Aubretia are low maintenance and easy to grow, preferring dry, well-drained soil in sun or part shade reaching a height of 15cm and spreading to around 40-50cm. Fully hardy perennials which will be enjoyed for years, growing outside with no protection required over winter.
