Starry summer blooms for perfect underplanting. A clump-forming perennial with lobed and coarsely toothed foliage held from March to October each year, offering beneficial groundcover and gap-filling interest in borders and ideal for growing under trees or shrubs where soil remains moist. From June through to August strong, slender stems emerge bearing pincushions of tiny pink flowers which are surrounded by intriguing, ruff-like bracts. Borne on multi-headed, branching stems, blooms are attractive to pollinators and plants make beautiful inclusions in containers too, either as a focal plant or mixed with other perennials. The bracts, or petals, have a delicate papery appeal and the distinctive flowers are wonderful cut for a vase or dried for other floral displays. Astrantia major var. ‘Rosea’ prefers to be grown in moist, well-drained soil of any kind. Plant in a spot with partial shade, although this variety will tolerate more sunshine than many.
