Tell Me More...
Astrantia major 'Midnight Owl' is not as elusive as its name suggests and will add a flash of purple with a mass of 'pincushion' flowers astride green foliage. Otherwise known as 'Hattie's Pincushion', Astrantia major 'Midnight Owl' is loved by bees, butterflies and pollinators and they will be treated to beautiful dainty blooms from June to August. Remove fading flowers at the base, to encourage further flowering for long, summer colour. Classed as hardy H4 by the RHS, astrantias are mound forming, herbaceous perennials, so will die back in the autumn and produce fresh new growth in the spring. They are the perfect, low maintenance addition to a cottage or woodland garden and will also thrive in a container or when underplanting other shrubs. Growing to a height and spread of 50cm, they will happily grow in any aspect, in moist, well-draining, fertile soil in sun or partial shade.
