Tell Me More...
Astrantia major 'Hadspen Blood' is a beautiful addition to any garden. Also known as 'Hattie's Pincushion', the name describes the flower style perfectly, with deep red umbels of delicate flowers sitting on warm dark stems amid leafy green foliage.A low maintenance, mound forming perennial, Astrantia major 'Hadspen Blood' will produce a mass of dainty flowers between June and August, reaching a height of 90cm and a spread of 50cm. Removing flowers at the base as they fade will encourage continuous blooms all summer that will be loved by bees, butterflies, and other pollinators. Classed as fully hardy H7 by the RHS, astrantia will die back in the autumn and reappear in the spring with fresh new growth. Typically suited to cottage garden or woodland style planting they will happily grow in any aspect, in moist, well-drained, fertile soil in sun or partial shade. Try planting with grasses in containers for a subtle effect or underplanting with other shrubs.
